Jamie Whitaker:

Hello and welcome. This is Jamie. You're listening to the To Do San Francisco podcast for Friday, January 23rd, 2026. If you're wrapping up the work week right now, take a breath. You've already done a lot. Today isn't about squeezing out perfection. It's about a final focused push so you can finish the week feeling satisfied, not depleted. One or two meaningful tasks done with intention can be enough to close the loop and step into the weekend lighter. Now, let's talk about today's main idea. A Civic Center pairing that's easy to overlook but incredibly rewarding. San Francisco City Hall and the Asian Art Museum sitting right across Civic Center Plaza from each other. Start with San Francisco City Hall. Even if you've lived here for years, it still manages to surprise people. As I'm recording this, there's a historical photo exhibit focused on our municipal transit agency, also known as MUNI, on the ground floor of the building. The scale, the dome, the lighting. It's one of the most beautiful civic buildings in the country, and part of the joy of visiting isn't just the architecture or the history, it's the life happening inside it. You'll often see couples in wedding attire or families photographing quinceanera dresses on their daughters, turning this public space into a shared celebration. It's a reminder that this building isn't just about government, it's about people marking meaningful moments. Then, across Civic Center Plaza, step into the Asian Art Museum. It's calm, expansive, and deeply grounding. Whether you spend an hour or an afternoon, the museum offers a chance to slow down and take in centuries of art, craft, and culture from across Asia. It's a perfect counterbalance to the grandeur of City Hall, reflective, intimate, and quietly powerful. Together, these two places make for a surprisingly ideal visit, beauty, history, humanity, and reflection all within a short walk. Before we wrap up, here's a small civility tip to carry into your weekend. When you're in shared public spaces, whether it be museums, plazas, sidewalks, move with awareness. Take out those earbuds. Pay attention to what's around you. Make room for photos, lower your voice, let others have their moment. Being a good citizen often means choosing not to interrupt someone else's joy. Thanks for spending a few minutes with me today. I hope you finish the week proud of what you've accomplished and curious about where the city might take you next. Please remember to subscribe and share the link to all of these podcasts on your socials todosf.buzzsprout.com. Until next time, take care of yourself, take care of each other, and I'll have more things for you to try to do in San Francisco on Monday. Have a great weekend.
