Hi, how are you doing? This is Jamie, and you're listening to the To Do San Francisco podcast for Wednesday, February 18, 2026. Thanks for taking a couple of minutes out of your day to listen. If you just rolled off a flight at SFO or pulled into the city with a trunk full of suitcases, welcome. You've made it. But I know the feeling - you get to your hotel in Union Square a little early in the day, you're ready to collapse onto a king sized bed, and the front desk gives you that sympathetic look and says your room won't be ready until 3 PM. Don't let that limbo feeling ruin your first hour in the city. You're in the heart of everything. You've got the energy, you've got the map, and you're about to have a much better afternoon than if you were just staring at a hotel lobby TV. Shake off the jet lag, the city is ready for you. First things first, drop the baggage. Almost every hotel in Union Square will check your bags for free or for a small tip before you check in. If you're staying at an Airbnb or a spot without a bell desk, check out apps like Bounce or Stasher. They may provide secure stash points and shops nearby. Now that you're hands free, here's your room ready countdown itinerary. The Dragon Gate Walk, walk two blocks north from the square to Bush and Grant Streets. This is the official entrance to Chinatown. Walking under the green tiled gate is the ultimate I'm finally here photo op. Keep walking up Grant Avenue. It's a gentle climb, and the shop windows are a feast for the eyes. Saint Mary's Square. If the Union Square crowds are a bit much, head to St. Mary's Square at California and Quincy Streets. It's a hidden rooftop park built over a parking garage. It's quiet, has plenty of benches, and features the striking fourteen foot statue of Sun Yatsen. It's the perfect spot to sit, reset, and people watch in the shade. How about the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Lounge? If you want some high end rest, walk ten minutes over to the SF MOMA on Third Street. You don't even need a ticket to access the ground floor and the steps cloister. It's a massive, beautiful public seating area where you can charge your phone and soak in the modern architecture. Finally, Yerba Buena Gardens, just across from the museum. These gardens offer huge grassy lawns and a stunning waterfall memorial to Martin Luther King Jr. It's the best place nearby to just lay on the grass and remind your body that it's no longer in an airplane seat. Now before you head out, here's your civility tip for the day. Be kind to the front desk. It's not the clerk's fault that the previous guest checked out late or the housekeeping staff is shorthanded. Being the angry traveler won't get your room cleaned faster, but being the charming traveler might just get you a text the second that key card is ready. Also, when you're walking through Chinatown, remember these are active sidewalks for locals doing their grocery shopping. If you need to stop to look at your phone or take a picture of a boba tea shop window, step to the side. Let the flow of the City keep moving around you. That's your guide to surviving the check in gap in San Francisco's Union Square. Welcome to the Bay! Go get some sourdough and enjoy the sun. Take care.
