Happy Friday, San Francisco. This is Jamie, and this is the To Do San Francisco podcast for March 13th, 2026. I know, I know Friday the 13th, but let's choose to see it as a day for unexpected magic rather than bad luck.

Now if you're looking to dodge the high energy chaos of the Castro or the frantic pace of Market Street, you just need to walk a couple of blocks to 225 Church Street. We're talking about the Pillsner Inn.

The Pillsner has been a staple of the Duboce Triangle, Lower Haight border for decades. It's an iconic gay dive, but in the best way possible. It's a true neighborhood bar where everyone is welcome. It's the kind of place where the music is at a volume where you can actually hear your friends and the lighting is just dim enough to feel like a hug. This is not a thump, thump club. This is a community hangout.

Why people love it? Well, first of all, there's the patio. This is the crown jewel. It's one of the best outdoor patio spaces in San Francisco. It's lush, surprisingly quiet, given how close it is to the J Church Muni line, and it's heated for those Karl the fog evenings, it's a literal sanctuary. There's the pool table as a prominent feature of the bar. If you want a game, this is your spot. There's almost always a game going, and the vibe around the table is competitive but friendly. You won't find $22 Art artisanal bitters here. Just solid pours, a great beer list, and bartenders who actually remember your name if you show up more than once.

On a Friday night, like tonight, the Pillsner is the perfect transition bar. It's where you'd go to decompress after work before the night gets wild, or where we stay all night because the conversation on the patio is just too good to leave. Any day of the week is a good opportunity to meet up with friends and catch up on real life at Pillsner Inn.

For today's civility tip, I offer what I'll call the pool table protocol since the pool table is the heart of the indoor space. Today's tip is about bar room sportsmanship. If you wanna play the next game at the pool table, the tradition is to put your quarters on the rail. Don't interrupt the current players to ask when they'll be done.

The coins tell the story and when it is your turn, win or lose. Offer a good game and a fist bump. Dive bars run on mutual respect. Keeping the energy friendly at the table keeps the whole bar's blood pressure low. That's a wrap for this week. I hope you find a sunny corner of a patio somewhere this afternoon in San Francisco.

Go out, be safe, and be the reason someone else smiles today. I'll be back on Monday. Stay lucky, San Francisco.
